About:

SODE School of Performing Arts teaching artists are industry professionals who are passionate instructors, experienced in multiple dance genres, music and performing arts styles. Our goal at SODE School of Performing Arts is to educate, inspire and expose our students to dance, music, language and theater basics in a fun and safe environment. We believe in encouraging self-expression, creative thinking, and confidence building throughout all of our programs. SODE School of Performing Arts offers in-school dance programs throughout elementary and middle schools across Los Angeles. Our programs like; Happy Dancing Brain, Dancing Through Leadership, Dancing Through the Common Core, The Percussionists Adventure, Theater Workshop 101, Dance History Workshop and Stepping Stone Dance (dance for students with mental and physical limitations) are our most requested programs. We're proud to introduce our new 2016-2017 programs: Choreography Workshop, Dancing Trough Visual Arts, U.S. Dance History (Jr High/High School) and Kreative Kinders. Aside from our in-school programs we also offer after-school programs in language, music, improv, Shakespeare, Theater and dance as well as 3 different dance assemblies: The History of Dance, Mad Scientist and Dream Little Dream.

Happy Dancing Brain:
Why Happy Dancing Brain?

SODE created Happy Dancing Brain to allow students of all capabilities to enjoy dance by exploring the art intellectually and creatively first. Happy Dancing Brain is a traditional dance program that focuses on cultivating creativity, building self-confidence, art integration and using dance as a problem solving tool.

Dancing Through the Common Core:
Theme: Four artistic processes organize the standards across the arts disciplines: Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting. During the length of the program students will execute dance warm ups, participates in Common Core based dance exercises that explores the four artistic processes, perform across the floor combinations, work on the end of term class choreography and practice stage presence skills for the end of term performance; the final exam. The Program: SODE School of Performing Arts has created Dancing Through the Common Core which combines traditional dance teaching with an emphasis on the Common Core Dance Standards. The goal is to use dance for critical thinking and allow the mind to do the work first before the body does. Messy Giants (workshop): Ever see a 3D papier mâché Mona Lisa? Or a tissue paper Degas painting? Messy Giants is a fun (but messy) class that allows your little artist to explore art history using arts and crafts, music and Theater games. Each week a SODE Teaching Artist will guide your young artist through eclectic arts and crafts project that will allow your little Picasso to express himself creatively and passionately! At the end of the session, every artist will take home their very own art portfolio.

MKM BollyStars is a dynamic dance company that prides itself for its high quality performers, rich dance heritage, & authenticity of dance styles. Energetic, graceful, and passionate, the company comprises of versatile industry dancers straight out of Hollywood. A rich dance heritage, a visionary artistic director, and a cultural and creatively diverse team, provide the backbone for what transpires to be truly memorable and statement driven work. MKM Bollystars is the only company in Los Angeles that professionally covers the span of Indian dance from Classical to Bollywood. Hence, they are able to share the depth & breadth of the cultural art forms in a comprehensive and authentic manner. The MKM Bollystars teaching artists are well versed in performance, theory, & arts education, leading students to internalize a traditional cultural art in manners that are relatable & relevant to their own lives. Our educational shows & workshops have been well received & have included invitations to present educational work at the Skirball Cultural Center, Hollywood Bowl, and 24th Street Theatre to name a few. Student Programming:

We offer multiple shows for various grade levels. Our shows have different focuses including classical Indian dance, Classical to Bollywood, and Dance and Music of India.

Students will learn the history and evolution of Indian dance, focusing on key elements of: story-telling through gesture, movement, and facial expressions; musical structure and basic rhythmic counting systems; vastness of dance culture from classical, to folk, to Bollywood; and the social and historical events that have propelled the movement of dance from the ancient temples to the commercial entertainment stages and film sets. The show touches upon the spiritual roots of Indian performing arts, the structural marriage between dance and theatre and music in India, and the ability to engage dance movement as a universal communicator. Students will be challenged to recognize and discern the movement and aesthetic difference between all three strands of dance; will be challenged to interpret, read and understand movement through a traditional cultural dance form; and finally asked to try on the dance form through interactive segments. Each show can have a post-performance talk-back.

About:

Grand Vision Foundation is a non-profit arts organization that serves the Los Angeles Harbor Area community through arts presentation and education. We were established in 1996 to save the Warner Grand, a 1,500 seat art deco movie palace located in downtown San Pedro. We encouraged the City of Los Angeles to purchase the Theatre and with community support, restored it to a viable standard for productions. Today, we remain the official City Friends Group to the theater, providing marketing support and advocacy for the historic building.

We have moved forward artistically and educationally. In 2008 we converted an adjacent storefront into our own performance and live music venue, the Grand Annex where we present live innovative world, roots, Latin, jazz, and Americana concerts serving a total audience of about 8,000 annually. In 2009, we created Meet the Music (MTM), our flagship education program for underserved public school students. MTM targets eight partner Title I schools that receive federal funds to close the achievement gap for low income children in the Harbor area, creating equitable access to high quality, sequential music education opportunities.

MTM is an in-school curriculum for 4th and 5th graders that teaches students the fundamentals of music and how to read music and play the recorder. Students also experience at least three live music educational concerts at the Grand Annex and an annual introduction to opera by the LA Opera, at the Warner Grand Theatre. Each year MTM serves 1,500 students.

Student Programming:

Through standards based music instruction and participatory concert experiences, Grand Vision Foundation’s Meet the Music (MTM) opens the gateway to music education for students in the LA Harbor community and surrounding areas, building skills for musical and academic success beyond elementary school. Meet the Music programs create equitable access to music education and increase students' cultural literacy, in partnership with public schools that lack consistent music education.

Roots of Music Program (RoMP) is a ten-lesson (semester long) cumulative curriculum for fourth graders, aligned with national and state standards, that introduces foundational music concepts and world music genres through three units: Rhythm, Pitch and Dynamics. Each of RoMP's three units has three lessons: an in-school pre-concert lesson with a trained teaching artist, an interactive world music concert with a professional world music ensemble, and an in-school post-concert lesson. The program culminates with a student performance of international songs learned in the program. MTM currently serves over 800 students annually.

Recorders in Schools is a year-long program for fifth graders, which integrates standards-based weekly music lessons with teacher-led group practice and performance. In partnership with classroom teachers, highly qualified teaching artists lead students in 24 sequential weekly classes in music notation, recorder playing technique and ensemble performance, culminating in recital performances at school. MTM currently serves 600 students in 20 fifth grade classrooms across six schools.

All MTM programs are enhanced with professional development opportunities for classroom teachers, training them in program curriculum and arts integration strategies. Comprehensive student and teacher workbooks which include arts integration activities for the classroom and program materials are provided.
