About:

Drama Education Network provides standards-based curriculum products, teacher training services, and school residencies in arts and literacy for grades PreK-12. Our mission is to empower educators to use creative drama and theatre arts to create an optimal learning environment in any classroom. We specialize in theatre education, literacy development, and arts integration across the curriculum.

Our curriculum program, Drama Works! Teaching System (formerly known as The Drama Game File), is used by teachers all over the world and has been adopted by public school districts such as Los Angeles, Burbank, Sacramento, San Diego, New York City, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Louisville. Drama Works! has been reviewed and approved as standards-aligned in both theatre and ELA for K-12 students by the California Learning Resources Network (clrn.org) and was recently approved by the Texas State Board of Education for adoption as the new theatre textbook for grades K-12 (it was the only approved text in grades K-8). It includes digital and print components such as the Creativity Cards.

Our curriculum and teacher training services are developed and led by Mr. Jonas Basom, winner of the Bravo Award for Outstanding Arts Specialist of California. Mr. Basom has developed his pedagogy over 23 years teaching in CA private and public schools, including 9 years in the LAUSD as a traveling theatre specialist, where he developed and taught 12 model lessons for grades K-6 integrating drama and literacy while coaching teachers and leading staff development. He is now a consultant presenter for school districts, arts organizations, and educational conferences across the USA and internationally. He has trained thousands of teachers and students in more than 30 states and 10 countries. Mr. Basom currently instructs teachers in arts education and classroom management as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University and the University of Phoenix.

Student Programming:

Our most popular residency program, “Literacy Comes Alive With Drama!” is a series of model integrated lessons that teach drama and develop literacy using state standards for theatre (VAPA) and Common Core (ELA). Teachers and students learn creative drama activities that use theatre techniques such as pantomime, improvisation, tableaux, and storytelling to develop literacy concepts and skills in SPEAKING (projection, articulation, expression, dialogue), LISTENING (oral language, communication, collaboration), READING (visualization, vocabulary, sequencing, story recall), and WRITING (character, setting, plot, details, grammar). Lesson Titles include Actor’s Tools, Cooperation, Speaking on Stage, Character, Setting, Plot, and Story Dramatization. Includes strategies designed for students with special needs (ELL, GATE, learning disabilities) and integrates with ELA programs such as Treasures or Open Court.

We also do customized residencies to integrate with social studies, science, math, or the other arts.

Our programs are designed and led in person by Mr. Jonas Basom, author, professor, consultant, performer, and master teacher. Residencies can be part of a PD plan for teacher training (see our professional development offerings).

Teachers actively participate in each session, receive written lesson plans, and learn how to continue integrating drama on their own after the completion of the residency.

Professional Development:

Our PD services prepare teachers to integrate drama across the curriculum, improve literacy, develop 21st Century skills, build classroom community, reach ELL and GATE students, and meet the VAPA and Common Core ELA standards for CA. We offer a range of topics and delivery methods to create a flexible, customized program to fit your objectives, schedule, and budget. Teachers increase their knowledge, confidence, and motivation to teach with drama by participating in activities, creating, connecting, and reflecting. Our methods incorporate constructivism, brain-based learning, Bloom’s Taxonomy, social and emotional learning, multiple intelligences, and cooperative learning.

As L.A.’s performing arts center, The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of deepening the cultural lives of every resident in Los Angeles County. The Music Center provides year-round programming inside The Music Center’s four theatres, on Jerry Moss Plaza, outside at Gloria Molina Grand Park—a 12-acre adjacent green space—in schools and other locations all over Los Angeles County. The Music Center presents world-class dance with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, participatory dancing experiences, free and low-cost public concerts and events, arts education programs, workshops, performances, interactive experiences and special events. The Music Center also manages the theatres, the Plaza and Gloria Molina Grand Park on behalf of the County of Los Angeles. The Music Center is home to four renowned resident companies—Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles Master Chorale, LA Opera and LA Phil.

Arts Education Programs
The Music Center's arts education programs serve young people and educators of all backgrounds and abilities, with festivals and events on campus, in-school performing arts assemblies, arts integration residencies for students (grades TK-12) and professional development for educators (TK-12) in dance, music, theatre visual and media arts. This includes The Music Center's Teach Through The Arts Initiative in support of Proposition 28 - with educator coaching and Professional Learning Community sessions with a Music Center teaching artist and online support. Our offerings feature over 50 performing arts assemblies (K-12) in dance, music, theatre and storytelling and free festivals and events each year, including the Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival (5th grade), the Very Special Arts Festival (TK-12) and student matinee dance performances (grades 6-12).

MISSION
To elevate, educate, and entertain audiences of all ages by presenting thought-provoking classics, socially relevant plays, and education programs in a beautiful, natural outdoor sanctuary for the arts. By passing on a sense of history to young people and adults alike, great works of art inform their present and inspire their future. A true renaissance theatre, we offer (at affordable prices) a diversity of programming from Shakespeare to poetry; from folk music to the development of future playwrights – all to help understand the world we live in and to embrace our shared humanity.

HISTORY
In the 1950s, Will Geer was blacklisted. His career shattered, the artist/botanist sold vegetables, presented Shakespeare, and played music with friends such as Woody Guthrie and John Randolph at his family home in Topanga. The seeds of the Theatricum Botanicum were planted. In 1978 Geer passed away. Daughter Ellen grew Theatricum into an Equity theatre and launched the Academy of the Classics and School Programs. An L.A. cultural landmark, Theatricum has been serving the patrons, families and students of the greater Los Angeles area for over 40 years.

School Days Field Trip Program
Offered for 5 weeks each spring and two weeks each fall, students (K-12) and teachers from public, private, parochial and special needs schools travel to Theatricum’s outdoor amphitheatre to see a full production of a Shakespeare play, participate in an interactive Living History program featuring Queen Elizabeth and William Shakespeare, and engage in technique workshops. Prior to the field trip, students receive an in-school preparatory visit and teachers receive an extensive study guide and are invited to participate in a professional development workshop. Schools are charge a per-pupil fee to participate (range of prices based on size of group). Chaperones are free at a rate of 1/20 students and $15 each after that.

Classroom Enrichment
Theatricum offers extensive arts education programming in the schools in the following categories: Assemblies (American History Concert-style assemblies, Living History visits, Shakespeare plays, and Children’s Literature); Workshops (juggling, combat, dance, text, music, ensemble, etc.); Residencies (Students Act the Classics - students are directed by Theatricum artist-educators in edited versions of Shakespeare plays; Classics off-the-Page - individually designed curriculum – including workshops and performances - created to bring a particular text “off-the-page” for a classroom or student group; and Americana off-the-Page - individually designed curriculum – including workshops and performances - created to bring a particular period in American History “off-the-page” for a classroom or student group). Programs are tailored for each teacher’s needs (budget, schedule, curricular) and are brought directly to the school site.

The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company (US) is a recognized leader in the fields of arts education, mentorship and community building, having been a thriving force in the underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles County for over two decades. Our participant-driven theatre-arts programs utilize arts education to mitigate the underlying family and community risk factors that threaten the healthy development of the 1,000+ children and adults we serve annually (90% in grades 5-12), including foster youth and incarcerated minors. Designed to empower youth with lifelong skills, the benefits of our programs go beyond the reach of a typical arts education workshop to provide vulnerable youth with the hope and confidence to overcome their difficult surroundings.

US was founded over 20 years ago with the mission to empower youth in underserved and at-risk environments with the means and methods necessary to explore personal and social conflicts and develop self-esteem and communication and coping skills in order to make positive life choices and become productive members of the community. Since then, US has grown from a small youth-intervention program into a collaborative, community-based theatre arts organization with a presence in underserved schools and juvenile detention camps throughout Los Angeles County. Today, with a staff of 7; a roster of 20 professional teaching artists; best-practice, standards-based curricula; and a significant role in countywide collaborative efforts, US’s innovative, place-based programs now serve over 1,000 Los Angelinos each year between the ages of 7-65+.

Professional Development:

Description of 4 hour Lesson: Discovering Our Voice: Personal Expression through Theatre.
The Unusual Suspects 4 hour interactive professional development workshop provides middle school teachers the tools to build a creative classroom environment where students feel safe to explore personal and social group identities; and develop characters and story lines which become the foundational material to fuel a collaborative playwriting process. The US presenter will use theatre arts and playwriting exercises that demonstrate theatrical story development, script writing, and improvisation techniques. The standards based, language arts enrichment workshop will utilize ensemble exercises to establish trust, improvisation techniques to illustrate conflict and character development strategies, and writing exercises to explore the link between personal, cultural, and community issues.

Get Lit – Words Ignite fuses classic and spoken word poetry to increase teen literacy and cultivate enthusiastic learners emboldened to inspire social consciousness in diverse communities. “Claim Your Poem, Claim Your Life.”

Get Lit – Words Ignite brings the transformative power of poetic expression to thousands of underserved young people each year through a unique standards based curriculum that fuses classic literature and poetry with contemporary spoken word techniques and performance while developing multiple literacies, refining creative self-expression, and fostering cultural understanding and social engagement. Poets, students, teachers, coaches, and mentors bring the Get Lit Curriculum into Los Angeles schools and connect them to each other through the countywide Classic Slam, where thousands come out to snap their fingers in response to crackling performances. Our award winning troupe, The Get Lit Players, perform classic and original poems in schools, performance venues, festivals, and public spaces throughout Southern California and the nation. The interrelated practices of reading, writing, and performance that are built into these programs combine with personal responsibility, empathy, and motivation to overcome obstacles to learning and build a foundation of self-confidence that equips youth to be successful, contributing citizens.

Student Programming:

The Get Lit curriculum has been offered in Los Angeles high schools since 2006. Currently, over 7,000 teens from nearly 100 high schools graduate from the program, which is taught in multiple classrooms in each school. The curriculum consists of reading, writing, memorizing and performing classic and spoken word poetry in a 12-lesson unit plan aligned to the Common Core Standards (Strand 9 and Strand 11: numbers 3,4,6,7 and 10). Students select poems by writers such as Kim Addonizio, Gwendolyn Brooks, Nikki Giovanni, Gabriel Garcia Lorca, e.e. cummings, Langston Hughes, William Shakespeare, Tupac Shakur, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Walt Whitman, and many others. Then, they write their own poems in response. This reflective, expressive process ignites a passion for language that fuels learning and a life long love of poetry and literature, while engaging each student’s deepest level of humanity and creativity.

Education Through Music-Los Angeles puts music back into inner-city schools as part of the core curriculum for every child, where it belongs. Education Through Music-LA is serving nearly 12,000 students with weekly, yearlong music instruction. Music has the power to transform the lives of children and their communities, and to provide them with such lifelong benefits including self-confidence, problem-solving skills, teamwork, perseverance, concentration, and motivation to stay in school.

Our objectives include:

Weekly, yearlong instruction for every child.
Integration across the curriculum to reinforce overall learning.
Ongoing training for music teachers and class teachers.
Guidance for school leaders to build towards sustainability.
Parent engagement and involvement as advocates for their music program.

Student Programming:

ETM-LA establishes strong partnerships with Los Angeles County schools to provide comprehensive, high-quality music education based on CA State and National Standards, during the school day. While many programs may serve only a subset of the school population, we provide equity for all children, including those with special needs, engaging every child with weekly, yearlong standards-based instruction that integrates skills and concepts across the curriculum.

Areas of instruction include general music, strings, guitar, recorder, ukulele, band, and chorus, determined through customized planning with each school. Depending on the grade level, each student receives one 30-50-minute music class weekly throughout the entire school year in a designated music room.

Professional Development:

In order to ensure high quality instruction for all students, music teachers participate in six annual professional development workshops and a five-day intensive training institute every August. We also provide academic teachers at partner schools with professional development workshops on how to connect skills and concepts from the music curriculum into lesson plans. In addition, ETM-LA helps principals and school district leaders plan for long-term sustainability.

Our in-school music education and training programs are overseen by Program Director Ryan Rowles, M. Ed, a school music educator with over 16 years’ experience, as well as Executive Director Victoria Lanier, a Juilliard Pre-College trained violinist with a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. in Education from Columbia Teachers College. ETM-LA's professional development workshops are hands-on, relevant to the participants and their teaching needs, and customized to provide support for a wide range of teaching levels.
