Culture Shock Los Angeles is a nonprofit dance and arts education organization that utilizes Hip Hop and urban dance culture to cultivate meaningful education, enrichment and entertainment programs to inspire positive change in the communities we serve.

Founded in 1994, the group is a diverse collective of dancers brought together to exchange ideas, share their passion for dance, and work towards a common goal of serving the community and making dance accessible to everyone. The organization is dedicated to providing instruction in a variety of urban dance forms; educating the public on the history of the Hip-Hop culture through workshops in urban art forms related to dance, music, poetry, and visual arts; and showcasing different dance and art forms through public performances, schools assemblies, and community events.

The organization uses hip-hop and street dance styles to involve traditionally under-served populations in the arts and presents these forms with the same dedication and artistry given to classical styles of dance. Culture Shock LA strives to highlight the positive attributes of the Hip-Hop culture by teaching social skills, leadership traits, a positive work ethic, teamwork, and self-respect alongside training in performing arts fundamentals.

Culture Shock LA works to further its mission by using the talents of its company members and its deep-rooted interest in the community to establish meaningful youth programs and outreach events in the Los Angeles area; by educating its dancers, students and audiences on the history of Hip-Hop, its cultural relevance, and its relation to other art forms; and by challenging its dancers with diverse and inventive performance pieces.

As L.A.’s performing arts center, The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of deepening the cultural lives of every resident in Los Angeles County. The Music Center provides year-round programming inside The Music Center’s four theatres, on Jerry Moss Plaza, outside at Gloria Molina Grand Park—a 12-acre adjacent green space—in schools and other locations all over Los Angeles County. The Music Center presents world-class dance with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, participatory dancing experiences, free and low-cost public concerts and events, arts education programs, workshops, performances, interactive experiences and special events. The Music Center also manages the theatres, the Plaza and Gloria Molina Grand Park on behalf of the County of Los Angeles. Arts Education Programs
The Music Center's arts education programs serve young people and educators of all backgrounds and abilities, with festivals and events on campus, in-school performing arts assemblies, arts integration residencies for students (grades TK-12) and professional development for educators (TK-12) in dance, music, theatre visual and media arts. This includes The Music Center's Teach Through The Arts Initiative in support of Proposition 28 - with educator coaching and Professional Learning Community sessions with a Music Center teaching artist and online support. Our offerings feature over 50 performing arts assemblies (K-12) in dance, music, theatre and storytelling and free festivals and events each year, including the Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival (5th grade), the Very Special Arts Festival (TK-12) and student matinee dance performances (grades 6-12).

MISSION
To elevate, educate, and entertain audiences of all ages by presenting thought-provoking classics, socially relevant plays, and education programs in a beautiful, natural outdoor sanctuary for the arts. By passing on a sense of history to young people and adults alike, great works of art inform their present and inspire their future. A true renaissance theatre, we offer (at affordable prices) a diversity of programming from Shakespeare to poetry; from folk music to the development of future playwrights – all to help understand the world we live in and to embrace our shared humanity.

HISTORY
In the 1950s, Will Geer was blacklisted. His career shattered, the artist/botanist sold vegetables, presented Shakespeare, and played music with friends such as Woody Guthrie and John Randolph at his family home in Topanga. The seeds of the Theatricum Botanicum were planted. In 1978 Geer passed away. Daughter Ellen grew Theatricum into an Equity theatre and launched the Academy of the Classics and School Programs. An L.A. cultural landmark, Theatricum has been serving the patrons, families and students of the greater Los Angeles area for over 40 years.

Student Programming:

School Days Field Trip Program
Offered for 5 weeks each spring and two weeks each fall, students (K-12) and teachers from public, private, parochial and special needs schools travel to Theatricum’s outdoor amphitheatre to see a full production of a Shakespeare play, participate in an interactive Living History program featuring Queen Elizabeth and William Shakespeare, and engage in technique workshops. Prior to the field trip, students receive an in-school preparatory visit and teachers receive an extensive study guide and are invited to participate in a professional development workshop. Schools are charge a per-pupil fee to participate (range of prices based on size of group). Chaperones are free at a rate of 1/20 students and $15 each after that.

Classroom Enrichment
Theatricum offers extensive arts education programming in the schools in the following categories: Assemblies (American History Concert-style assemblies, Living History visits, Shakespeare plays, and Children’s Literature); Workshops (juggling, combat, dance, text, music, ensemble, etc.); Residencies (Students Act the Classics - students are directed by Theatricum artist-educators in edited versions of Shakespeare plays; Classics off-the-Page - individually designed curriculum – including workshops and performances - created to bring a particular text “off-the-page” for a classroom or student group; and Americana off-the-Page - individually designed curriculum – including workshops and performances - created to bring a particular period in American History “off-the-page” for a classroom or student group). Programs are tailored for each teacher’s needs (budget, schedule, curricular) and are brought directly to the school site.

The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company (US) is a recognized leader in the fields of arts education, mentorship and community building, having been a thriving force in the underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles County for over two decades. Our participant-driven theatre-arts programs utilize arts education to mitigate the underlying family and community risk factors that threaten the healthy development of the 1,000+ children and adults we serve annually (90% in grades 5-12), including foster youth and incarcerated minors. Designed to empower youth with lifelong skills, the benefits of our programs go beyond the reach of a typical arts education workshop to provide vulnerable youth with the hope and confidence to overcome their difficult surroundings.

US was founded over 20 years ago with the mission to empower youth in underserved and at-risk environments with the means and methods necessary to explore personal and social conflicts and develop self-esteem and communication and coping skills in order to make positive life choices and become productive members of the community. Since then, US has grown from a small youth-intervention program into a collaborative, community-based theatre arts organization with a presence in underserved schools and juvenile detention camps throughout Los Angeles County. Today, with a staff of 7; a roster of 20 professional teaching artists; best-practice, standards-based curricula; and a significant role in countywide collaborative efforts, US’s innovative, place-based programs now serve over 1,000 Los Angelinos each year between the ages of 7-65+.

Professional Development:

Description of 4 hour Lesson: Discovering Our Voice: Personal Expression through Theatre.
The Unusual Suspects 4 hour interactive professional development workshop provides middle school teachers the tools to build a creative classroom environment where students feel safe to explore personal and social group identities; and develop characters and story lines which become the foundational material to fuel a collaborative playwriting process. The US presenter will use theatre arts and playwriting exercises that demonstrate theatrical story development, script writing, and improvisation techniques. The standards based, language arts enrichment workshop will utilize ensemble exercises to establish trust, improvisation techniques to illustrate conflict and character development strategies, and writing exercises to explore the link between personal, cultural, and community issues.

Education Through Music-Los Angeles puts music back into inner-city schools as part of the core curriculum for every child, where it belongs. Education Through Music-LA is serving nearly 12,000 students with weekly, yearlong music instruction. Music has the power to transform the lives of children and their communities, and to provide them with such lifelong benefits including self-confidence, problem-solving skills, teamwork, perseverance, concentration, and motivation to stay in school.

Our objectives include:

Weekly, yearlong instruction for every child.
Integration across the curriculum to reinforce overall learning.
Ongoing training for music teachers and class teachers.
Guidance for school leaders to build towards sustainability.
Parent engagement and involvement as advocates for their music program.

Student Programming:

ETM-LA establishes strong partnerships with Los Angeles County schools to provide comprehensive, high-quality music education based on CA State and National Standards, during the school day. While many programs may serve only a subset of the school population, we provide equity for all children, including those with special needs, engaging every child with weekly, yearlong standards-based instruction that integrates skills and concepts across the curriculum.

Areas of instruction include general music, strings, guitar, recorder, ukulele, band, and chorus, determined through customized planning with each school. Depending on the grade level, each student receives one 30-50-minute music class weekly throughout the entire school year in a designated music room.

Professional Development:

In order to ensure high quality instruction for all students, music teachers participate in six annual professional development workshops and a five-day intensive training institute every August. We also provide academic teachers at partner schools with professional development workshops on how to connect skills and concepts from the music curriculum into lesson plans. In addition, ETM-LA helps principals and school district leaders plan for long-term sustainability.

Our in-school music education and training programs are overseen by Program Director Ryan Rowles, M. Ed, a school music educator with over 16 years’ experience, as well as Executive Director Victoria Lanier, a Juilliard Pre-College trained violinist with a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. in Education from Columbia Teachers College. ETM-LA's professional development workshops are hands-on, relevant to the participants and their teaching needs, and customized to provide support for a wide range of teaching levels.

Student Programming:

ENTER STAGE RIGHT field trip program offers students and teachers an introduction to the live theatre they will never forget! This proven program has been adored by over 75,000 students and teachers. (1) It begins with an in-class Theatre workshop for each classroom participating. The art form is introduced in such a fun way that student will be on their feet creating artists tableaux before they have time to feel shy about it. By the end of the first workshop, your students will be proudly thinking of themselves as a theatre artists. (2) Then, students and teachers take a field trip to LA’s most charming professional theatre for an interactive, live theatre performance that spans from the ancient Greeks to 21st century multi-media. ESR was built to connect to the VAPA standards, and thus satisfy many different areas of standards based learning. ESR is a private performance for up to 100 students and teachers, so that your school has it’s very own exclusive show. (3) Our teaching artists return to your school following your performance at 24th STreet Theatre to help your students unpack all they experienced at the theatre. The cost of an ESR fieldtrip package includes two busses, the Pre and Post-field trip in-class workshops and the field trip to the theatre. IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES are also available with 24th STreet's teaching artists and are customized to fit your school’s needs.

UniverSOUL Hip Hop, LLC is a K-12 cultural educational group of international, award-winning artists and educators. We artfully blend the creativity of Hip Hop with the rigor of standards-based pedagogy and practices to provide cutting edge, interdisciplinary dance programs that cultivate lifelong learning, social fellowship, and 21st century success.

Founder and Executive Director - Tiffany Bong, is a Hip Hop dance lecturer for the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at University of Southern California, a master teaching artist for The Music Center, and an arts education specialist, presenter and grant panelist. The organizational team consists of 12 dance educators that hold an array of artistic accomplishments, which include world championship titles and recurring television appearances, as well as teaching experience in special education, English language development, and common core and arts integration.

UniverSOUL Hip Hop shares each school and district’s mission of ensuring that quality and equitable arts learning is at the core of each child’s education. Since its debut in 2012, our dance residency and assembly programs have tripled in school sites and the demand for this program continues to spread across school networks. The key to this growth is our team’s commitment to building longstanding partnerships and effective, accessible programs that serve the diverse learning needs and creative vibrancy of our communities.

Created by inner-city youth, Hip Hop reflects and celebrates the cultural diversity and powerful narratives embedded in the rich landscape and legacy of Los Angeles. This multicultural, multilingual dance practice serves as an inclusive, relevant, and empowering tool for young minds to develop a sense of heritage, confidence, self-mastery, innovation, service, and global citizenship.

Student Programming:

We offer the following dance programs:

1. ARTIST RESIDENCIES: Experienced teaching artists deliver robust, standards-based curricula that integrate the 21st century “Four C’s” skills (Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration), Common Core practices, and classroom studies.
Through collaborative tasks and group learning, students are challenged to develop the social-emotional character and practical skills needed to create, critique, practice and perform dance in an upbeat, structured, and supportive setting. New content is presented in each lesson, which scaffolds into the creation of original dance works. Residencies culminate in an interactive, student performance with family and friends.

Model residencies include the following (flexible to school needs): Planning & Evaluation Meeting 10 Sequential, Student Sessions Student Culmination & Presentation Student Reflection Assembly Performance Professional Development for Staff

2. WORKSHOPS & FAMILY NIGHTS: Workshops are a 60-minute introductory discovery into the rich artistry and relevance of Hip Hop dance. Participants learn the foundation of classic Hip Hop dance styles in a supportive and vibrant environment.

3. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE: In our power-packed assembly - Spirit of Hip Hop, 5 internationally acclaimed Hip Hop dancers unite together to perform show-stopping movements that inspire students to find the courage and commitment to embrace one’s passions. Students learn and practice movement vocabulary along the way and learn the personal stories and American landmarks that influenced Hip Hop. The performance ends an exciting student freestyle dance contest and open Q&A about themes such as: self-expression, diversity, equality, careers, citizenship, wellness, and service.
