Creative Wellbeing is an approach for fostering communities of wellness, especially for systems-impacted youth, those at-risk of becoming systems-impacted, and the adults who support them. The model offers strategies for promoting mental health and wellness that include culturally responsive, healing-centered, arts-based learning for youth, as well as professional development, coaching, and emotional support for adults.

Explore these resources to gain strategies to promote positive cognitive, social, and emotional development and to increase protective factors like emotional coping skills, social connectedness, and community supports. Learn more about how the Creative Wellbeing approach is being implemented in LA County.

CREATIVE WELLBEING CURRICULUM GUIDE (2022)

This guide supports support teaching artists and facilitators in understanding the foundational concepts of Creative Wellbeing. It is a springboard to brainstorm, design, and lead your own Creative Wellbeing activities and workshops. We encourage you to be creative in your applications of the tools and strategies.

ORIGINAL FACILITATORS GUIDE (2020)

This guide provides tips and strategies for facilitating activities virtually. These strategies are a result of scanning best practices in a rapidly-emerging field, as well as lessons learned from Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network members in implementing training adaptations to virtual spaces.The guide will focus primarily on in-person facilitation, but can also provide important virtual guidance.

In 2023-24, teaching artists provided Creative Wellbeing for youth and adults through in-person and virtual direct services, professional development sessions, and arts-based workshops. Youth and adults receiving direct services and participating at some special events were surveyed about their experiences. These end-of-year reports summarize the data from those surveys and elaborate on learnings about Creative Wellbeing affecting their mental health and protective factors including social-emotional competencies and social support.

In its second evaluation of the Creative Wellbeing approach, Harder+Company Community Research found that young people who participated experienced positive social-emotional benefits while also exploring their interests, building technical art skills, and increasing their access to the arts. Adults who participated in the program are experiencing and embodying Creative Wellbeing values and healing themselves through this work. They further found that

Teaching artists in the program make students feel comfortable, included, and safe to express themselves freely and make mistakes,
Professional development participants appreciated the hands-on learning approaches of the sessions, and
Internal champions and responsiveness to program and school needs have supported the Creative Wellbeing partnerships and their ability to implement the program.

The report concludes with recommendations for how to continue to improve the program.

Healing Centered Engagement

In spring 2022, the LA County Youth Commission approached the Arts Ed Collective with an interest in incorporating artwork produced by youth into the Helping Centering Youth Voices in Mental Health report to the Board of Supervisors, to make the report more accessible to youth and other members of the general public. Thirteen systems-impacted young artists—either independently or with support from community-based arts organizations—created artwork that conveys some of the themes implicit in the report and that shares their own personal journeys with mental health. These pieces are powerful representations that offer a window, beyond the data, into the experiences of LA County youth.

The structure for this poetry exercise is clear and user-friendly. Three 30-word love poems will be written: (1) to things you see out your window, (2) to someone you love and (3) a poem to yourself.

Director of Street Poets Inc. Matthew “Cuban” Hernandez will take you on a journey of self-discovery through poetry. Matthew introduces the activity with a read-aloud of Jeffery McDaniel's “The Quiet World." He follows with a guided poetry writing exercise that engages students in observation, reflection, and introspection to write 30-word poems that describe their emotions. Students carefully select words that are meaningful and capture their feelings.

Join us for this interactive video with Asia One and Lily Breeze from “No Easy Props." You will lose yourself to the music as you experience healing through the arts. Learn freestyle, hip hop, and the two steps dance moves that are demonstrated for implementation in your classroom. Use this video for morning meetings or closing circles to engage students in movement and expression. Poetry is an excellent tool to use in the classroom for social-emotional learning to help students navigate their emotions. In this activity, students learn to ask themselves questions as they write an "I am" poem to someone who matters.
